AWE currently have excellent opportunities for Radiation Protection Dosimetrist to join our Materials and Analytical Science group, bringing their experience to AWE and to successfully play a key role delivering for our customers.

The Radiation Protection and Dosimetry Group are responsible for providing legal and technical advice to a range of internal and external customers regarding health and safety in relation to radioactive materials and other sources of ionising radiation. No other organisation in the UK provides radiation protection advice across the same range of applications and customers, from plutonium manufacturing facilities to forensic laboratories, from some of the most powerful X-ray machines in the world to national security operations.

We are looking to recruit a Dosimetrist to join our team. A career in radiation protection is an excellent choice for someone who wishes to use their practical, scientific and technical knowledge and skills in a multi-disciplinary environment that involves both office-based and practical elements and where the ability to communicate with people from a wide range of backgrounds is essential.

The successful candidate will have either operational experience in health physics, dosimetry, environment, radioactive waste management, health and safety (ESH) or other associated fields, or have a life science, chemistry or physics degree or have an interest in data processing and data analysis in an occupational health setting. Intermediate working knowledge of IT (Microsoft Office applications: Teams/Outlook/Excel/Word) and ability to use bespoke software applications is essential for the role.

Internal training will be provided, including placements within the AWE Approved Dosimetry Service and assessment to achieve the required knowledge, experience and skills are achieved for the role ensuring that we develop world class professionals.

Following successful completion of the training scheme the role will focus on Dose Record Keeping in delivering AWE Approved Dosimetry Services to employees and contractors, that includes:

Creating and maintaining radiation worker records in-line with instructions from Radiation Protection Advisers.

Ensuring classified radiation workers have complete dose records by chasing return of missing dosemeters and requesting estimated doses from Radiation Protection Advisers.

Updating and issuing Radiation Passbooks / Overseas letters to radiation workers visiting other radiation establishments nationally or internationally.

Issuing a variety of reports to different customers, e.g. AWE teams, external companies, regulators.

Creating and maintaining process documents.

Collaborate with Occupational Health team ensuring classified radiation workers have a valid medical.

Supporting Dose Assessment and Bioassay Co-ordination team/processes.

Supporting Radiation Protection & Dosimetry projects.

Supporting maintenance/improvements to the dosimetry record keeping database and writing adhoc reports.

The role will also provide development opportunities to become a member of the Society of Radiation Protection or other relevant professional bodies.

All candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role. Also, should the need arise, be willing and able to work in designated areas.
