Description

Rare Tennessee Vols Early 1930s Football Cardigan Letterman's Sweater

Sweater is orange and has two front pockets. Has a sewn on T above the left pocket with two white knitted stripes around the left arm. There is no football symbol on the T. They werent applied during this era. There are 5 brown large buttons. It has 2 sewn on labels on the inside. Collar label is for the distributor and manufacturer. Label on the inside left (while wearing) hem has been sewn on backwards and its hard to make out what is printed on it.

There is a orange sewn on patch on the inside right (while wearing) with name Henry Krouse stitched on it in white. Players name is still very legible.

Sweater belonged to Henry Krouse who lettered in football 3 years for the UT Volunteers in 1932, 1934 and 1935. Henry Krouse is in the Tennessee Volunteers record book; tied for #5 on the Kickoff Return list with a 98-yard return for a touchdown at North Carolina on Oct. 5, 1934.

Played for coach Robert Neyland. Other notable teammates while at Tennessee were: Beattie Feathers and Murray Warmath. Also, Deke Brackett - was on the 1970 Marshall Football staff that was involved in an aircraft accident.

He attended Memphis University School high school in Memphis, Tn and was the football captain as a senior for the 1929 Owl football team. Graduated from MUS HS in 1930.

Sweater was distributed by The Athletic House of Knoxville and was made by OShea Knitting Mills - Chicago. Material appears to be wool. Theres no size tag but it looks like a medium.

For its age, the sweater is in overall good condition. It does have some holes in it. There are about 25, mostly small ones with the largest being on the right pocket. Cant find any sewn repair spots. Buttons are in great condition and are still sewn on tightly. Buttonholes are in great condition and not loose.
