Description

I am the 4th owner of this Original Paint 49 Panhead. The Goulding Sidecar was manufactured for Harley and is also Original Paint and was put on the bike by the first owner.  The photos show the bike and Sidecar in the position they would be with the hack attached, but I prefer riding the bike without the car attached, so I built a brace with wheels to roll it around on.  I expect to ship it unattached, since a new owner will want to tune the camber and toe-in to suit their own riding preference, or may also wish to ride the bike solo. I could attach it to the bike if absolutely necessary, but it will not be trued up for camber and toe-in.   All of the necessary original mounting hardware is attached to the mounting arms. I will be including copies of the 1949 Enthusiast Magazine  with the bike and you can see 49's with identical sidecars attached to them! The last 3 owners, including myself have been Antique Motorcycle Club of America (AMCA) members, and I am still an Active Member. I have had this bike judged by a panel of 5 AMCA judges in the Original Unrestored Category. All numbers were matching which is a prerequisite for having a bike judged by the AMCA. I will be sending the judging sheet with the title.  Restorations go through a series of 3 separate judging sessions since owners try to improve the correctness of their bike to hopefully get it to a high enough score to get a Winner Circle Award.   Original, Unrestored bikes ;like this are usually only judged once since the whole idea is to leave it as it was found.  That has been my approach to owning the bike, and I have only addressed some few things that were necessary in order for this to be a running bike.  Almost forgot on change!  The last owner used the sidecar and wanted more power, so he had the motor bored out professionally from 61 to 74 ci, hence the one D ring on each cylinder head which would not have been on the bike originally.  The carb is tuned for the increased compression.  The paint on the bike and sidecar is in remarkably good condition as you can see in the photos.  When I got the bike and sidecar they had accumulated many years of oil and grease.  I took every part off the bike and sidecar except the motor itself and degreased everything.  I think that is what preserved the paint so well! When you look closely at the photos, you will note that the front fender has welded on mounting brackets which is how they were made for the first year Hydra-Glides. After that the fenders were riveted to the mounting brackets. The original spokes are in excellent condition.  Check out the 49 Orange Piping Saddlebags!  All the one year only buckles and straps are there just as they were when the dealer installed them on this bike when new. I have bubble wrap in them to hold their shape and have spent a lot of elbow grease oiling them to restore moisture to the leather.  They look great but probably should not be used for real storage in order to preserve them hereon out.  Everything works as it should on this bike. What you see is a bike that has not been patched together but has all the original parts that it came with from the factory, or some accessories that were installed by the original owner with the following exceptions:The exhaust system ( squish pipe, Y-pipe and muffler, are high quality period correct reproductions from Carl Olsen's (AMCA member) shop, Carl's Cycle Supply. The original muffler was replaced in the early 50"s by the first owner, with the chrome cigar style muffler that Harley started using in the 50's.  It was completely rotted away and I decided to replace it with the correct style that would have come with the bike from the factory, so it could be safely ridden. The coil and leads are replacements.  The original coil will ship with the bike, but probably does not work.  The leads were very bad and I never even tried it. The right side rear view mirror is an OEM period correct replacement.  The bike came with only the left side mirror and I like to ride with 2 mirrors.I have placed the front brake lever on the right side like they would have done from the early 50's on.  It was just too much to clutch with my left foot, shift with my left hand and then also try to brake with my left hand as well, so I just flipped it over to the right side.  Easy to just stick it back on the left if you are a purist!, The period correct style tires are of course not original, and were put on by the 3rd owner who owned the bike for about 25 years.  He was bequeathed it by his best friend when he passed away and he had owned it since the early 70's.  White walls may or may not have been available as an option in 49, but they are in very good condition and match the sidecar, so I saw no reason to replace themSome wiring to the parking lights and head lights have been replaced because they were disintegrating and shorting out.  They all work very well now.The battery is the original case, but now has SLA (sealed lead acid) internals and will not leak and carry twice the amperage of original acid batteries.  It is still a 6 volt systemThe carburetor is the original One Year Only Linkert M36 body.  The body was in good shape, but the bowl, needles, and internals were in poor shape so I had it rebuilt with stainless steel internals by Mike at IN TO THE WILDERNESS Linkert Carb in Pinedale, WY.The windshield that will come with it is a period correct OEM Harley windshield, but it is one I put on for riding in cool weather.  It looks like it came with the bike, but it did not!I have a video of the bike running that I can send to any serious buyers.  I am also willing to answer questions that a buyer might have that have not been addressed here.  I can be reached at 5 0 three, nine 1 3, zero 9 seven nine.I will be happy to assist your shipper with loading and will take photos of that process at my end to send to the buyer.  Payment will be $500 via Paypal at close of Auction, and then the balance due within 3 business days will be by Wire Transfer to my bank.  Title is clear and will be sent via Certified Overnight Express upon receipt of final funds. This is a Vintage bike:  Please do not bid on it if you are not familiar with what these are.  Everything is working as it should as far as I know, but there is no warranty either express or implied in this listing
