Description

Corruption was common place in the colonies as the government officials that were sent to America by Britain accepted bribes from wealthy merchants to overlook certain tariffs and extend favors while others either paid the exorbitant price or worked in violation and became subject to the penalties of the law. The American Revolution was fought for self governance in order to remove the corruption and restore the common good that a greedy few had stolen from the rest of the country; the Constitution was established to ensure the promotion of the general welfare for all. 100 years later, ?Robber Barons? came to monopolize their industries and were capable of buying the law through campaign donations to maintain dominance of their industry, promote their own profits and pass any of the burdens onto the lower economic classes. This continued until ?muckrakers? started writing stories of this overall corruption. In this time period, 80-90% of the population was voting, mostly along the same party lines as their fathers before them. 200 years after the Constitution was created, multinational corporations are once again seeking to dominate as they contribute large sums to Congressional campaigns in order to obtain laws that benefit themselves as the lower economic classes have to try once again to absorb the burden. Today, a 56% voter turnout is considered high for our dysfunctional political system. Can this repetitive cycle be ended? Should Americans call for a Constitutional Convention to correct the problems that Congress refuses to address by proposing amendments to be ratified? Will you choose to be part of the solution or choose to watch as America becomes just another fallen Empire?
