BEAUTIFUL DUNCAN PHYFE TABLE AND SIX (6) CHAIRS. PRICE IS $350.00.
About Duncan Phyfe, the Furniture Maker Duncan Phyfe was born into the Fife family in 1768 near Loch Fannich, Scotland. When he was 16 years old, in 1784, his family moved to the United States and settled near Albany, New York. Here, Phyfe became an apprentice to an Albany cabinetmaker.
In 1792, after finishing his apprenticeship, Phyfe moved to New York City. Here, he opened his first cabinet-making shop on Broad Street, later moving the shop to the Partition Street (now Fulton Street) area. In 1793 he married and changed his name from Fife to Phyfe. He had 4 sons and 3 daughters from this marriage.
Two of his sons, Michael and James, went into partnership with him in 1837 and the business operated as Duncan Phyfe and Sons. In 1840, his son Michael died and the name of the business was changed to Duncan Phyfe and Son. Phyfe was one of the first American cabinetmakers to successfully use the factory method of manufacturing furniture, and in his later years he employed over 100 carvers and cabinetmakers to create his furniture.
Phyfe became known as one of America?s leading cabinetmakers by selling his furniture to a number of fashionable and influential New York City residents who demanded his furniture for their homes. In 1847, after much financial success, the business was sold at an auction and Phyfe retired from the furniture industry. He remained living in his house on Fulton Street until his death in 1854. At his death, his fortune was estimated at being approximately $500,000.
In 1922, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City organized a comprehensive exhibit of his work which revived an interest in his furniture and helped increase his popularity. He was a member of the Brick Presbyterian Church and a very strict Calvinist. He was noted for always being seen smoking a short pipe.
If you would like to learn more about Duncan Phyfe, we recommend two books about his life and furniture. Nancy McCelland's Duncan Phyfe and the English Regency is the first. Furniture Masterpieces of Duncan Phyfe by Charles Over Cornelius is the second.
