Description

Vintage Cannondale 26"/24" 1988 SM600 Mountain Bike - Mountain Trials.I first saw this bicycle in the local shop in 1988 and spent hours dreaming of owning and riding it. After over 30 years I was able to track down an extremely clean and all original example. Unfortunately, the bike is just too small for me.... and after considering adding BMX bars and making it a comfortable "cruiser" I just can't bring myself to change up such an excellent survivor of a unique mountain biking philosophy. According to history, Mr. John Olsen, the progenitor of "technical trail riding" was consulted by Cannondale on the 26" - 24" concept. He would later design the Raleigh Edge mountain trials bike; a similar example and concept to the Cannondale except in a steel frame. The 1988 SM600 was the twilight of the Cannondale 26" - 24" offering with many changes and improvements since the seminal 1984 SM500. The 1988 SM600 represents the pinnacle of Cannondale's mountain trials concept. This example has weathered its 35 year existence extremely well with all original components and even the stock IRC - Panaracer tires which still hold air and have remarkable tread left even with age checking. The component group is all SunTour, except for the Dia Compe brakes and Sansin hubs representing the unique specification that Cannondale prescribed for this model. Cables have been lubricated and the derailleur cables have been upgraded with new Jag Wire housing, brakes are still the original red housing. Brake pads are original with light wear and the braking surfaces on the original wheels are non - worn and in excellent condition. The original Vetta seat is free from any tears or damage. Paint does have some blemishes. This bike needs to go to an individual who truly respects the golden age of mountain biking and understands what this bicycle represents in MTB history. Very little would be required for a full show room restoration, and you would be hard pressed to find a more intact and well-conditioned starting point. Of course, taking the bike to the hills and enjoying it for what it was truly intended for would also be a great outcome for this bike. No need to set land speed records.... just enjoy the climbing with the short chain stays and 24" rear wheel, and low speed riding while focusing on picking your way through technical challenges. Specifications:Rims- Araya RM-20 Super Hard Anodize, 26"Front, 24" RearSpokes- 14 Gauge Stainless SteelTires- IRC Racer X1-26x1.75" Front,24x1.75" RearCrankset- SunTour XCD 6000Freewheel- SunTourFront & Rear Derailleur- SunTour XCD 6000Shift Levers- SunTour AccushiftHeadset- Tange-Seiki Falcon Sealed MechanismBrake Set- Dia CompeSaddle- Vetta AnatomicNylon Toe Clips & Straps, Seat Post QuickReleaseThe SM600 uses the Suntour XCD drive train with Dia Compe brakes and is finished in black with red highlights (cables, stem, seat).
