  My story

Every week Peg, the shelter owner, writes an article for our local newspaper.

It’s called “Happy Tails” even though some weeks it makes you cry.

The story from April 16, 2018 was about Socks and his brother Midnight and how they came to live at Sugarfoot Farm Rescue.

A year later Socks is still waiting for is furever home.

You can read the article below.Socks has come a long way since then.

He’s still a little shy but now he dearly loves treats. He’s lived almost all his life in a cage and he needs an understanding family who will work with him.

He’s learning about boundaries and needs a securely fenced yard to play in.What he wants out of life is “To Be Somebodies Dog” that’s all he wants.

He wants to be with someone, someone who will give him pats on the head or a scratch on the back.

He’s a fair size boy, about 40 pounds and in good health.

His russet colored fur is short, and he keeps it well groomed.Socks is neutered, has up to date vaccinations and is microchipped too.

His adoption fee is only $50 and he’s ready for his fur-ever home.

There’s a perfect fur-ever home out there somewhere.HAPPY TAIL – MIDNIGHT & SOCKSLast year a man came to the rescue that wanted to bring two dogs to us.

He said the original owner of the mother had gone to jail.

She had pups but only two survived.

He built a pen for them and they had lived in it for the last five years. He went on to tell me that one of the dogs was friendly, but he hadn’t been able to pet the other one in years.

He said the dog would hide whenever he went to feed them.

They hadn’t been neutered or vaccinated.

He didn’t even know how he would get the dogs to us.

The more he talked, the more I knew they were not good adoption prospects.

As hard as it is for me to say “no”, I had to tell him I couldn’t take the dogs.

He just shrugged and said he would just take them to the shelter.

I hated the thought of them going to a shelter.

They were not good candidates for finding a home, but I was trying hard not to take in any more dogs.

As he walked off, I told him it would be on his conscience that these dogs would probably be euthanized.

He just shrugged and said with a smirk “it won’t be on my conscience, it will be on the conscience of the person euthanizing them”.

  I was furious!

  I couldn’t believe his attitude.

As he drove off, all I could think was that I had just wasted an hour of my life on this man.About a month ago, a pickup truck pulled up to the gate.

In the back of the truck was a huge, wooden box that took up the bed.

It was closed in except for some cattle wire along the top of the sides.

A man got out and started to tell me about the two dogs in the back.

  The story was very familiar.

It was the same person who had come here last year.He said the dogs had to go that day.

If I wouldn’t take them, he would take them to the shelter, but he really hoped I would take the dogs.

Against my better judgement, I agreed to take them.Unloading the huge crate in the back of the truck was a challenge.

We managed to unload it and put it inside the gate.

As he left, there were tears in his eyes.

The tough guy was really a softy.I looked inside.

There was a black dog named Midnight and a brown dog named Socks.

Midnight looked up at me and wagged his tail.

Socks cowered in the corner, shaking like a leaf.

I got a hammer and opened the back.

Midnight came out to meet me.

Socks just stayed inside, trying to hide in the corner.

I got a blanket and put it in for him and then got some treats.

  Midnight couldn’t get enough.

Socks wouldn’t move, so I put them on the floor.Their crate was in a fenced in area.

  Midnight made himself at home.

Socks hid in the wooden box and if he came out would hide behind the doghouse.

Every day I gave them treats.

Midnight looked forward to them and gradually Socks began to take them out of my hand.In no time at all, Midnight would come out of the pen and play with the other dogs.

Then he started coming in the house.

He decided that being part of a family was the place to be and at night would sleep outside the bedroom door.Socks opened up a little at a time.

He began to look forward to me bringing him treats.

Whenever I would go anywhere, when I came back he would greet me at the gate, tail wagging.

I could now pet him, scratching him behind the ears, and patting his sides.

He wouldn’t venture outside the pen though.

He was secure in his little world.

This Saturday I looked out the window and there was Socks, on the lawn with the other dogs, exploring.

He had finally come out of his shell. Two dogs that had spent 5 years penned up, are now ready to go to a forever home.

They have realized what they’ve been missing.

Midnight and Socks have a lot of time to make up for.

If you have any questions or would like to adopt Socks, please reach out to the adoption group directly. PetSmart Charities does not facilitate the adoption process. Thank you.
